One of two men who robbed a businesswoman at a shopping centre was convicted in the Gun Court and sentenced to seven years hard labour on Wednesday. He is Orlando Cooke, 30-year-old labourer of Portmore, St Catherine. When the case was tried, Cooke was given seven years for robbery and six years for illegal possession of firearm. The sentences are to run concurrently so he will only serve seven years. The evidence are that on November 14, 2010, the accused and another accomplice went to the Town Centre Plaza in Portmore, St Catherine. Both men held up the complainant at gunpoint and robbed her of a gold chain and over $500,000. The men ran and the victim made an alarm. Residents chased and held Cooke. However, his accomplice escaped. An investigation by Detective Corporal Llewellyn Madden led to criminal charges against Cooke. - R.T.
