Big blow for young sprinter - Eltham's Brissette ruled out of champs after school's late entry |
|||||
Aneka Brissette ONE of the hottest young female sprinters in the island, Aneka Brissette of Eltham High School, will not get a chance to parade her talent at this year's ISSA Boys and Girls' Championships as her school will not compete at the March 28-31 meet due to the late submission of their entry form to ISSA. At yesterday's ISSA Boys and Girls' Championships press conference, held at the Terra Nova Hotel, the news was revealed by a senior member of ISSA. "Eltham High only brought in their entry on Tuesday, several days after last Friday's late deadline," the source told Star Sports. The excuse they gave for bringing in their entry late was that they did not remember. It will be a severe blow for Brissette as she has been the great form this season after blazing the track in events from the 100 to 800 metres. A first-year Class III athlete, she was favourite to win the 200m and 400 metres. Recently, she showed her good form at the Carifta Trials where she finished second and third in her events. Competing in the girls' Under-17 100m, she clocked 12.75 seconds for third, just one-hundredth of a second behind defending double sprint champion Shauna Helps of Wolmer's Girls'. In the 200 metres, running in a negative wind of 3.7 metres per second, she clocked 24.82 seconds to finish behind winner Sequina Cameron of Edwin Allen who will compete in Class II. very impressive The young athlete has been very impressive all season with one of her better performances coming at the Ben Francis meet in Hayes, Clarendon, competing with the Class I girls' in the 200 metres, she finished third overall in 25.55 seconds, as only the Vere Technical duo of Shericka Jackson( 25.15) and Olivia James (25.48) ran faster. She was even more impressive in the Class III 400 metres, clocking the fastest time, 56.09 seconds, on the grass track. The winner in Class II Shimaraya Williams of Clarendon College ran 57.93 seconds. But despite her promise, young Brissette is yet to compete at Champs, but it is no fault of her own. She missed Champs last year due to internal problems with her coach and her former school St Catherine High and transferred from that institution to Eltham. Yesterday Star Sports tried unsuccessfully to contact both her coach and school but could not get a response from either party, as both lines rang without answer. - R.G. |
