Dancehall dominates Inner-city Carnival |

The third leg of Inner-city carnival, hosted at Olympic way in Kingston was full of energy, but resembled a regular dancehall event. A few revellers streamed out wearing self-made costumes; however, the majority wore regular dancehall attire and partied in dancehall fashion. The STAR arrived at a packed venue at 12:30 a.m. during the juggling of Addiction sound, and they played hard-core dancehall selections. The women didn't seem to mind as they moved their bodies to the sound of Lady Saw and Spragga Benz's Backshot. During the playing of this song, dancing partners assumed dancing positions doing moves resembling that of a regular carnival setting, only to a more Jamaican rhythm. "Mek mi see all the girls dem who can wine now," the DJ yelled, he then went on to play Buju Banton's B... Rider. erotic acrobatic skills At this point, the women wearing shorts assumed their positions on the dancehall floor and attempted to outdo each other with their erotic acrobatic skills. Songs like Vybz Kartel's Rampin' Shop and Slow Motion encouraged intimacy much like soca music. The DJ also hit a high note when he played Popcaan's So Unique Records-produced Only Man She Want. Various dance groups could be seen doing choreographed moves under the watchful eye of the video light, while the DJ cheered them. The STAR spoke to the organiser of the event, Carnival Mumma, who said she was satisfied with the support while asking for more sponsors. "Most of the expenses I had to foot it myself because the sponsors are reluctant to come on board for Inner-city carnival. But the crowd good and mi love the support; a from 6 p.m. wi deh ya and everybody a enjoy dem self," she said. The night ended with performances by various established and upcoming artistes including Kibaki, Flexx, Jah Vision, among others. |
