Drug smuggler dies in police custody

A report in the Halifax Chronicle Herald has stated that a 25-year-old Prince Edward Island man detained upon his return from a vacation in Jamaica, and jailed on drug smuggling charges has died in custody.

Furthermore, the report outlines that Nova Scotia's Justice Department says an inmate has died at a Halifax, Canada, jail two days after being arrested on drug charges.

The department says the 25-year-old man was found dead in his cell at 8:30 a.m. yesterday at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.

Justice officials, Halifax police and the province's medical examiner are investigating, but foul play is not suspected.

The department says next of kin has been notified, but the inmate's name will not be released. In a statement, the department says the man was arrested on Sunday and arrived at the jail on Monday.

He was facing charges of smuggling, importing a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Calder Ross Collins of Mount Stewart was detained at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Saturday after border agents suspected he was hiding drugs inside his body.

Collins was kept under close scrutiny in a holding cell at the airport until the drugs allegedly appeared in a special toilet used for inspecting human waste.

He appeared in court on Monday on a Customs Act charge of smuggling and Controlled Drugs and Substances acts, charges of importation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Federal Crown attorney Jeff Moors asked for two days to prepare for a bail hearing.

Collins was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility until Wednesday.
