WOLMER'S Boys' Class I athlete Yanick Hart scored a big win on yesterday's final day of competition at the JAAA Burger King Carifta Trials, at the Stadium East track, surprising Kingston College's Stefan Fennell in the Under-20 Boy's 110 metres hurdles. Fennell, who has been impressive all season and unbeaten over the barriers, was expected to maintain his dominance over Hart, who has only beaten him once in his career, but after failing to recover from a poor start he could not peg back the plucky Wolmerian. Hart held on to score a close win in 14.14 with Fennell second in 14.16, with Manchester High's Omar McLeod third in 14.25. It was a quick double for Wolmer's as minutes later, Karey Kelly gave the David Riley-coached team another win. Competing in the boy's Under-17 200 metres event, he ran on strongly at the end to win the event in 22.49, getting the better of Ardenne's Xandre Blake (22.52) and St Jago's Ivan Henry who was third in 22.59. The two-day meet was a great one for the Michael Dyke-coached Edwin Allen, as following success on the opening day there was more yesterday, with new national junior record holder of the girl's discus Tara-Sue Barnett leading the way. Barnett showed that her recent mark of over 50 metres in the event was no fluke as she advertised her excellent form heading to Champs, with a quality throw of 48.42 metres to win the girl's Under-20 event. It was a one-two finish for the Frankfield school, with Sasha-Gaye Marston finishing second with a throw of 45.24 metres, while Holmwood Technical's Gleneive Grange took third with 45.11 metres. Rochelle Frazer captured the girl's Under-17 shot put with a throw of 11.79 metres to get the better of St Andrew High's Venique Harris who was second with a throw of 10.24 metres. There were mixed results for Calabar throwers in the boy's Under-20 shot put. Both Ashinia Miller and Federick Dacres had to settle for second and third place finishes respectively. They were both upstaged by Munro College's Emmanuel Onyia winning the event with a good effort of 19.09 metres. |
