An appeal of a Jamaican pilot who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in a massive cocaine shipment from Jamaica to Canada over a decade ago has been dismissed by the Ontario Court of Appeal. He is Lyle Niemi, who had reportedly flew a private plane from the island and landed at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport in Canada on November 7, 2001. The plane was carrying 263 bricks of cocaine and 17 bricks of hashish. Niemi and two passengers were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the plane landed. It is reported that after initially being acquitted in 2004 of importing, trafficking and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered Niemi back to trial after the Crown appealed. Niemi was convicted at his second trial and sentenced in 2008 to 14 years. In its ruling made public on Wednesday, Canada's Appeal Court said the sentence is justified because of the nature of the crime. |
