CRASH KILLS WI BATSMAN - Said to have lost control of his car

Runako Morton

There were unconfirmed reports last night that former West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago and Leeward Islands batsman Runako Morton, 33, was killed in a car crash.

Reports started swirling last night on social media sites Facebook and Twitter are indicating that the cricketer was killed when he lost control of his vehicle and ran off the road, slamming into a pole.

Up to press time last night, there was no confirmation of the accident by any major news outlet but several West Indies players were seen posting messages honouring the batsman.

Current West Indies player Carlos Brathwaite tweeted "RIP Runako Morton. Gone but not forgotten" while Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman Justin Guillen tweeted "RIP Runako Morton. Gone far too soon. Lost for words ..."

In Jamaica, former West Indies cricketer and vice-president of the West Indies Players Association, Wavell Hinds, was also paying his respects to Morton by posting on his BlackBerry Messenger "RIP Runako, I will treasure the great memories my friend."

Efforts by THE STAR to get a comment from Hinds were unsuccessful.

Morton was a right-handed batsman and a right-handed off-break bowler who was on-and-off the West Indies squad. He made his debut in February 2002, as a replacement for Marlon Samuels. He played 54 one-day internationals and last represented the West Indies in July 2009.
