Junior stars ready for Carifta challenge
RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer

Kingston College's Clive Pullen will be one of the favourites to shine at Carfita.

The island's leading junior athletes will try to book tickets to next month's Carifta Games, scheduled to take place in Bermuda between April 7-9, and begin the battle at the Carfita Trials, at Stadium East, over the next two days.

Athletes will compete in the Under-17 and Under-19 categories. There will be 30 finals on the opening day, which will include 15 on the track, with the other 15 slated for the field. Tomorrow's action will start at 11:10 a.m. with the running of the preliminary rounds of the girls' Under-17 300 metres, along with the first final of the day, the boys' Under-20 long jump, where Gibson Relays winner Clive Pullen of Kingston College will be one of the favourites to win the event.

Among the finals on the track slated for tomorrow are the boys' Under-20 100 metres, which should attract a lot of attention as it will be loaded with quality athletes. The final is slated for 2:45 p.m. but prior to that the athletes will be involved in the preliminary round, which will start at 12:55 p.m.

It is expected that the likes of World Youth Olympic 100 metres champion Odean Skeen of Wolmer's Boys, World Youth 100 metres champion Odail Todd of Green Island High, along with the University of Technolgy's Julian Forte and Carifta Under-20 defending 100 metres champion Jahzeel Murphy of Bridgeport will be some of those athletes who could face the starter for the event. If all these athletes report for the event, it should be a fantastic final, as fans will get a chance to see a preview of what will come for the remainder of the season, in a year which will see the World Junior Championships held in Barcelona, Spain.

World Youth 100 metres bronze medallist Christania Williams of Edwin Allen High should have things her own in the girls' Under-20 100 metres. Williams is a cut above her peers and following her season debut of 11.64 seconds, done several weeks ago at the Youngster Goldsmith meet, she should show her class and win convincingly. It will be interesting to see if former Vere Technical athlete Deandra Whitehorn, who is now based at Racers Track Club, will face the starter tomorrow. If she does, she is expected to finish behind Williams, while her teammate at Edwin Allen, Monique Spencer, is also expected to do well. Spencer, who transferred from Oracabessa to Edwin Allen, at the start of the school year last September, has been doing well all season and showed that good form at the Gibson Relays last week where she clocked a personal-best 11.86 seconds.

One of the field event finals, which all eyes will be on tomorrow, will be the girls' Under-20 discus at 4 p.m. as the Edwin Allen duo of Tara Sue Bennette and Sashagaye Marston along with St Jago's Kellion Knibb are expected to have a battle royal in an event which could give the victor a big psychological advantage going into the ISSA Boys' and Girls' Championships later this month.
