Dyke's Edwin looking for strong Gibson

Edwin Allen coach Michael Dyke believes his team will be able to improve on their sub-par performances of past Gibson games when the 36th staging of the relay carnival gets under way at the National Stadium tomorrow.

From a local standpoint both Edwin Allen and Racers Track Club are set to dominate the event. This following a tough meet last year where they failed to win a single event. It should be a different affair for Dyke this time around though, as they look set to take control of things among the females.

At the end of the day, they could walk away with five wins with their Class Two 4x100 metres team looking to create history by being the first team to go under 45 seconds. At the MILO Western Relays a few weeks ago the quartet, which included World Youth 100 metres bronze medallist Christania Williams, scorched the track with a record run of 45.00 seconds despite some terrible baton changes. Once the stick goes around without any mishap this team is capable of going 44.6, as with the likes of sprint hurdler Claudette Allen and one of the best schoolgirl curves runner in Saquina Cameron back to full fitness, they could also erase the school record of 44.79 seconds set by a very talented team in 2008.

It should also be success in the Class Three and Four 4x100 metres, along with the 4x200 metres Open and 4x800 metres Open relays. In Class Four they have looked awesome and could also be the first quartet to go under 47 seconds. Edwin have not only looked dominant in sprints but have been the best female middle distance team so far this season.

"I am very pleased with how things have been going so far and there is no pressure on the girls," Dyke told Star Sports.

"Tomorrow's event will be treated like a training session as the girls are not really excited. Only those who are not competing are excited," he added.

The event will get under way at 9:30 a.m. with the high school boys set to get action going in the 4x400 metres Open where an epic battle is expected.

Some seven overseas-based teams are down to do battle with local athletes. Of the seven overseas teams down to compete, Flying Angels out of Canada will have the largest group with some 50 athletes. Other overseas teams include Team Bickle, who will compete in the high school girls Class I 4x100 metres relay. Guadeloupe will run in the high school girls 4x200 metres Open, Team Guyana who will compete in the club's male 4x100 metres, Team Martinique, Team Bermuda and Team Bahamas, who are set to battle Racers Track Club in the men's 4x400 metres.

Vere Technical with Shericka Jackson and Olivia James look set to continue their dominance in the girls 4x400 metres, as they look to stretch their unbeaten run since last year in the event. The Vere team will also be hoping to capture the girls Class One 4x100 metres.
