Supervisor charged with larceny offered bail

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

A former bedding company supervisor was offered bail in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday for allegedly fleecing more than $400,000 from her employer last year.

The accused woman, who has been identified as Nadia Riley of St Ann's Bay, St Ann, is charged with larceny of a servant.

no prior convictions

Her attorney, Stacy Allen, told Resident Magistrate Sandra Wong-Small that her client has no prior convictions, is not a flight risk and is a respectable member of her community.

The lawyer also noted that Riley has undergone a question-and-answer session with the police since her arrest on February 17.

The prosecution declared that it is not opposed to the accused woman getting bail, while conceding that it is still awaiting several statements, including a copy of the company's audit report.

Wong-Small offered Riley $250,000 bail with up to three sureties and ordered her to surrender her fingerprints to the police.

She is to report to the St Ann's Bay Police Station on Mondays and Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and is to surrender her travel documents as well. A stop order will also be placed at all ports of entry.

The matter will be mentioned again on May 15.

Allegations are that on March 1, 2011, an audit conducted at Riley's former place of employ revealed a discrepancy in the number of mattresses purportedly ordered from the parent company in Kingston. It was also revealed that $453,000 from the sale of some mattresses could not be accounted for. Riley was arrested and charged following a subsequent investigation.
