RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer
The speedy Edwin Allen quartet will take aim at cracking the historic 45-second barrier for the girls Class II 4X100m relays, an event which should be one of the main attractions at next weekend's Gibson Relays at the National Stadium. At the Milo Western Relays, the quartet of Paula Pinnock, Claudette Allen, Sequina Cameron and Christania Williams had the large crowd buzzing with excitement as they recorded the fastest time ever by a quartet in the class, stopping the clock at 45.00 seconds. Holmwood Technical who clocked 45.87 seconds for second place. What was even more awesome was the fact that they ran the time despite some poor exchanges, which was disappointing for Dyke. disappointed "I was very disappointed that we were not able to go 44 seconds as this team is capable of going 44 seconds every time they take the track," he said. The coach is expected to make a change for next weekend's event as Shanice Lewis will be inserted in the team. Fans are expecting to witness a history-making moment as once the baton goes around, Vere Technical's record of 45.01 seconds set at the Gibson Relays in 2001 could be history. The quartet will also be hoping to remove the school record of 44.79 seconds set at the Penn Relays in 2008, with a quartet which included the likes of Shawna Anderson, Kaycea Jones, Naffeine Briscoe and Gayon Evans. It must be noted that Jones, Evans and Anderson were members of Jamaica's silver-winning team in the 4x100 metres, at the World Junior Championships, in Poland, in 2008. While Edwin Allen are expected to dominate the event, the Maurice Wilson-coached Holmwood will be hoping to lower their colours and they will be relying on the likes of Diana Johnson, Kedisha Dallas and Yanique Thompson to do so. But, it will take a monumental task for any team, including Holmwood, to deny Edwin. Fans will get a chance to see the impressive Williams on the anchor leg making her Gibson Relays debut for her new school after sitting out last year after transferring from Oracabessa High. |
