Arnett Gardens snatched victory from the clutches of defeat after netting an extra-time goal before going on to win on penalties against Trench Town neighbours Boys' Town in the final of the Jamaica Yellow Pages/Kingston and St Andrew Football Association Jackie Bell Knockout football competition played last night at the Water-house Mini-Stadium. The game finished 2-2 after full and extra time, before the competition's most successful team Arnett went on to triumph 5-3 on penalties and notch their sixth title, while pocketing the $350,000 prize money. Newton Sterling (fifth) and Leon Strickland (90+5) scored for Arnett during regular time to cancel out strikes by the Red Brigade's Rafiek Thomas (74th) and Renae Lloyd (90th). Boys' Town earned $200,000 for their troubles, while the team Arnett defeated to reach the final, Tivoli Gardens were awarded third place and $150,000. Boys' Town's semi-final opponents, Harbour View, will collect $100,000. The game's opening goal was netted in the fifth minute by the inform Sterling, who executed a looping header after being supplied with a cross from the left side by Jonathan Williams. territorial advantage Boys' Town seized territorial advantage following the early set back, but it was Arnett that should have extended their lead in the 21st minute. But Williams hammered over from inside the six-yard box after a free kick by Sterling's fortuitously broke for him. Second-half substitute, Thomas, gave Boys' Town a deserved equaliser in the 74th minute when he pounced on a ball in Arnett's area to head over keeper Damion Hyatt. Boys' Town's coach Andrew Price, who was ejected from the technical area minutes before the half-time interval, must have thought his team had bagged their second Jackie Bell title when Llyod collected a pass in the area from Xavian Virgo, and rounded Hyatt before hammering home eluding two defenders on the line. The Junglists were not about to lose in the final for the second consecutive year, however, having been beaten on penalties by Harbour View last year, and in the final minute of added time equalised. Sterling's beautiful header was tipped on to the crossbar by Boys' Town custodian Kirk Porter, but the rebound fell to Strickland who fired into the empty net. Arnett's coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis revealed that he had no doubt that his team would find a way back in the game. "The team has a spirit, the only thing I am concerned about is our marking; we weren't tracking well enough." Boys' Town got another glorious opportunity to crown themselves champions in the 10th minute of extra time after being awarded a penalty, but Oneil Thompson's spot kick was easily saved by Hyatt. At that point Price came to the conclusion that his team was not meant to win. "It wasn't to be today, we got numerous opportunities to put the game away in full time and we got a penalty in extra time and didn't convert that," Price reasoned. The deadlock could not be broken resulting in a shoot-out when Hyatt came up trumps again, as he saved Thomas' kick to earn Arnett a 5-3 win on penalties. |
