Alleged gang members to be charged

The Portland police are expected to lay charges against two men believed to be members of the infamous Clansman gang who were reportedly arrested during an early morning raid at Shrewsbury yesterday.

It was a large contingent of heavily armed police officers who swooped down on a house in a remote area of Shrewsbury, in the hills of Hope Bay. Two men were captured, one of whom had absconded bail in Spanish Town and was wanted for a number of crimes.

Police sources said they arrived at the location near dawn, and used tear gas to sift out the two, who they believe had fled Spanish Town and was seeking a safe haven in Portland.

A 9mm pistol along with 13 live rounds was recovered by the police during a search of the house.

Yesterday, detectives from the Port Antonio Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB) were kept busy interrogating the two men who are expected to be charged today.

Meantime, the police are appealing to residents to be on the look out for strange men in their communities, and to inform them of any suspicious activity. According to the lawmen, with the stance now taken by the security force to dismantle the various gangs, many criminals are fleeing to other parishes with the intent to reorganise themselves.
