ACB cleans house - Police continue to crack down on in-house corruption

Close to 100 men and women were booted from the police force last year as efforts were intensified to rid the force of corrupt members.

The police Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) said it was successful in cracking down on corruption last year and will do even more this year.

According to the ACB, from January to December 2011, 11 police personnel were dismissed as a result of corruption, two were retired in the public interest and 72 were not allowed to re-enlist when their contract expired.

In addition, 65 members of the force were arrested, with 41 charged by members of the ACB.

In 2010, 23 members were dismissed as a result of corruption, 28 were retired in the public interest while 137 men and women were not permitted to re-enlist in the force. Also in 2010, 57 were arrested on corruption charges with 36 of that number charged.

Twenty-four police personnel were convicted of corruption charges last year while seven were acquitted and 42 cases further were placed before the court.

In 2010, 13 members of the force were convicted and four acquitted after being charged with corruption.

According to the Police High Command, the figures for the past two years show that the majority of objectives outlined in its 2010-2012 anti-corruption strategy were met.
