Best: Jamaica had better respect me

Barbadian Tino Best says Jamaica's batsmen will need to show him respect, as should he play in this weekend's Regional Four-day Tournament clash at Sabina Park he will not take kindly to any attempt to intimidate him.

"If they come at me, they know what they are going to get, so they need to come and play me with respect the same way I respect them as players and their talent," said Best, who two seasons ago guided his team to the regional Super50 title at the same venue.

"I plan to go into the game doing the same thing that I have been doing going into games for the past 10 seasons, trying to bowl at pace and hit the right line and length," he added.

The 32-year-old Best, who, along with his teammates arrived in the country yesterday, is expected to form a three-pronged pace attack with Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach. This is expected to provide Jamaica, the four-time defending champions, with a stern test.

Jamaica are joint leaders with Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana following an 81-run win over the Windwards at the same venue last weekend.

They will, however, be without the lone first-round centurion, Chris Gayle, who, along with André Russell, Marlon Samuels and Jerome Taylor, will be participating in the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League, which is slated to start on Friday.

Brendan Nash, Tamar Lambert, the recalled Danza Hyatt, Carlton Baugh Jr, and David Bernard Jr are expected to shoulder the bulk of the batting.

Barbados, in the meantime, who drew a bye in the first round, will enter seeking a winning start.

"It's always a challenge coming to Jamaica to face Jamaica," said new captain Kirk Edwards.

"We know Jamaica are playing good cricket and won their first-round match, but we are not going to play it up much in our minds," he added.

"We have a good team, with a nice balance of youth and experience, and players who want to either get a place in the West Indies team, or get the attention of the selectors for the first time."

In addition to their fast bowlers, the Bajans will bank their hopes on spinner Sulieman Benn, and batsmen Kirk Edwards, Kraigg Brathwaite and Ryan Hinds.
