Music industry insiders are raving about the high-quality music coming out of the Smartkid Records' multi-purpose recording studio, located in Portmore, St Catherine. The studio was established in 2010 and is now recognised as one of the best multi-purpose recording studios located in the Kingston Metropolitan Region.

"I have worked with some of the most renowned entertainers, including Zamunda, Lutan Fyah, Spragga Benz, Sizzla, Christopher Martin, Frisco Kid, Andrew and Wadda Blood, Junior Reid and others. ... they all love the quality of the studio and the environment I create to make great reggae music," Omar 'Smartkid' Currie, managing director of Smartkid Records Company Limited, said in a release.

The company scored its first major success with the release of the Life Riddim CD in 2010, which featured successful reggae artistes like Zamunda, Influential, Bono-G, Lutan Fyah, Linkage Internal and Frisco Kid.

In 2011, Smartkid followed up with the release of a hardcore, full-throttle dancehall rhythm called Venom, which established the company's street credibility and got people to sit up and pay attention to this talented young producer.

"The Life Riddim CD was a big hit on the radio stations, YouTube and also in the streets, and it got a buzz in Europe because it showed I have an ear for good music, but the Venom showed that mi have a feel for dancehall as well," he said.

The Venom rhythm featured artistes such as Sizzla, Alva, Zamunda, Spragga Benz, Lutan Fyah, New Kidz, Tajji, Singer Jah and Renegade. After the success of the Venom rhythm, he has returned to his first true love, reggae. He produced the Progress rhythm for the new Lutan Fyah single, Work for What You Want on the Smartkid Records label.

And now he is preparing to release his magnum opus, the True Frenz rhythm, a new dancehall compilation featuring heavyweight acts such as Beenie Man, Zamunda, Lutan Fyah, Govedem, Popcaan, Baby Ice and others.

"This rhythm is now in the mixing stages and will be released in this month," he said.

Smartkid is now truly living his childhood dream. "I originally started singing at a very early age but found that without adequate support, it was not easy to make the transition into the music industry. I am very passionate about music and possess an impeccable work ethic. My interest in singing faded, but I remained ardent and committed to one day becoming a main player in the music business," he said.

Smartkid staged parties which were very successful and used the money generated to bankroll the creation of his state-of-the-art studio.

"I have invested significantly in the latest equipment, top engineers wired the studio, the quality of the music produced here is comparable with the big studios in Kingston," Smartkid said. "This studio specialises in audio editing and mixing, demo duplicates, vocal recordings, publishing ... and the artistes love it here."

Now that he has gained a foothold as a successful producer, Smartkid is now turning his attention towards managing upcoming artistes such as Gavodem and Baby Ice.

"I want to help them develop their talents and break into the music arena. Talent is not enough, the youths need direction and support," he said.

Smartkid Records Company Limited is working hard to take the music to the highest level and continue the good work in the music industry that was set by the great Bob Marley and others, Smartkid believes.

"Right now, mi nah drop the ting, quality music mi say," he said.
