WESTERN BUREAU:

Popular dancehall entertainer David 'Mavado' Brooks will return to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court next month following an adjournment due to the absence of one of his lawyers.

Brooks, of West Armour Heights in St Andrew, is accused of assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property.

In court on Monday, defence lawyer Martyn Thomas asked Resident Magistrate (RM) Winsome Henry to put off the case for a later date, as fellow defence counsel Tom Tavares-Finson was absent.

Thomas also revealed that the complainant in the case had been instructed by the Anti-Corruption Branch to give an additional statement in the matter, which is now in the hands of the prosecution.

witness statement

Brooks had his bail extended until March 7, at which time his defence team is to be supplied with a copy of the extra witness statement.

Allegations are that on July 22, at 7 p.m., the complainant was driving a white Toyota Camry motor car along the Belmont main road in St James, when he pulled over on the side of the road to allow a line of traffic, including members of the entertainer's entourage, to pass.

A member of the entourage reportedly approached the complainant's car, opened the door and slapped the complainant in his face and also kicked him in the groin. The complainant came out of the car and retaliated by kicking his attacker to the ground.

More men approached from the line of traffic and a confrontation ensued. The artiste then reportedly pinned the complainant between the wheel of his car and the door of the complainant's car, causing the man to sustain a swollen foot and a cut on his shoulder. The complainant's car was also damaged in the incident at a value of $25,000 .
