NFL vets say Giants

Eli Manning

The New England Patriots may be the favourites for local bookmakers Justbet, but as far as some of the biggest players in NFL history are concerned, Super Bowl XLVI will go to the New York Giants when both teams meet in Indianapolis tomorrow.

As far as former superstar Oakland Raiders linebacker Rod Martin is concerned, the Giants' superior defense will make the difference when both sets of players collide tomorrow; that, and of course, his open disgust for the Patriots.

"I am going for the Giants because I can't stand New England first of all," said Martin .

"Tom Brady is a great quarterback no doubt, and if you don't get to him and put pressure on him he'll be hard to beat, but I believe the Giants have four guys up front that can do that and make him get rid of the ball, and even sack him a few times.

"It's not going to be an easy day for either quarterback, but I think, defensively, New England's defensive backs are weaker than the Giants," said Martin, who had a recorded three interceptions in Super Bowl XV to hand the Raiders one of their two championships during his time there.

Many would think that former Pro Bowl defensive end Gary Jeter, who played for both franchises during his 13 seasons in the NFL, would be facing a moral dilemma this weekend, with his allegiance split down the middle.

However, having received his big break before going on to spend most of those years in the 'Big Apple', Jeter has no problem holding on to his 'first love' in times like these and like Martin, is expecting Giants quarterback Eli Manning to once again, like he did in Super Bowl XLII in 2008, engineer another win for 'Big Blue'.

"Well, first of all I am a Giant," Jeter underscored. They (Giants) gave me my first opportunity in the NFL, I was first-round draft pick in 1977 and they have always been in my heart.

"When I look at this game, when they played during the regular season it was a close game and it reminds me back when the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008. The key to this game is not just pass rush but I think you need overall pressure," he assessed.

"(Tom) Brady relies on that pocket protection and the thing that the Giants did before and what they can do again, if they get that gut pressure and force the throw, then that will bring out Tom Brady's only flaw, he seems to get flustered under pressure up the gut. Plus the fact that Rod Gronkowski, who is his number-one target at tight end is injured makes it even harder for the Patriots,' said Jeter.

Rowing against the tide, however, is former Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers running back Wendell Tyler, who will not bet against the Patriots and Brady - a three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
