Search for missing teen called off

The search for a missing teenager who reportedly drowned on Thursday during a school trip at Shan Shay Beach in Portland was called off for a second straight day due to poor visibility and murky water.

Yesterday, the marine police and local divers were forced to call off the search shortly after 3:45 p.m. due to the inclement weather which was compounded by poor visibility, strong winds, and rough seas.

The search, which was schedule to resume at 9 o' clock yesterday morning got on the way shortly after 10 a.m., due to early morning showers and strong winds that delayed the efforts of the marine police and local divers.

On Thursday, two male students from St Andrew College, who arrived at the beach with approximately 30 other teenagers on a school trip, went swimming and got into difficulty shortly after 2 pm.

The students, 16-year-old Shane Burke, and Demel Osbourne, 15, reportedly drowned before help could reach them. However, during a search of the area by the marine police and a group of local divers, Osbourne's body was recovered.

Yesterday, the search turned up empty-handed, despite more than five hours of intensive search conducted by the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard, the marine police, and local divers.

The search for the missing teen is expected to resume today.
