Maragh lands double

Rajiv Maragh - File

HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida, (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh rode a double at Gulfstream Park here Sunday but disappointingly missed out on the big money feature races on the 11-race card.

Maragh made all the running to win race three with favourite Aqsaam before returning to win race five with 11-1 bet Seve.

However, he failed to make a mark in the added-money events. In the US$400,000 Holy Bull Stakes, he finished fourth with longshot Fort Loudon and was second from last in the $200,000 Forward Gal Stakes with 13-1 bet Quick Flip.

The 26-year-old Maragh kicked off his success over 1-7/16th miles, carrying the four-year-old brown filly Aqsaam to a half-length win over the field.

Aqsaam set the pace along the rails, posting easy fractions of 24.91 seconds for the quarter and 49.93 for the half-mile.

The filly shook off a challenge from Millennia entering the stretch to prove best in the final stages.

In race five over 6-1/2 furlongs, Maragh raced the three-year-old bay colt Seve just off the pace through the first quarter as Unbridled Fire led early on.

Maragh then moved Seve into contention on the turn, survived two bumps with Unbridled Fire in the stretch before getting home 1-1/4 lengths clear.
