Is my baby at risk?

Dear Counsellor:

I am very worried because I am pregnant and infected with genital warts. Is my baby at risk? What does this mean for my pregnancy?

Pregnant and Worried

Dear Pregnant and Worried:

Genital warts are brought about by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is very possible for you to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby because most pregnant women who are infected with genital warts usually have healthy pregnancies and healthy birthing experience. However the virus can be passed to a new born baby through a contaminated birth canal. It is also possible for genital warts to become larger during pregnancy because of the depressed immune system brought on by the pregnancy. You should discuss your infection with warts with your health care provider as soon as possible, so you can be informed.

Mysterious medication

Dear Counsellor:

My boyfriend came home two evenings ago with some medication. He told me he had a strain in his back from lifting material on a construction site where he is working, and that he went to the doctor and the doctor gave him medication for both of us. I question why the doctor sent medication for me and I did not lift anything. He said the doctor is only trying to protect us from any possible infection that could develop as a result of the strained back. Counsellor, what is going on, should I take the medication? I believe my boyfriend is lying.

Worried Lover

Dear Worried Lover:

Your boyfriend must be open and honest with you. You deserve to know the truth about any medication you are taking. One way to understand more about your boyfriend's action is to take the medication he gave you to your health-care provider and explain what your boyfriend told you. You should do this as soon as possible because your health is very important.
