MVP stars set for season opener

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

Several of the nations top athletes, including Olympic Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Melaine Walker are expected to make their debut at this weekend's Grace Jackson meet, which will mark one of two meets on the JAAA's calendar.

AFTER a very busy weekend last week where there were some five development meets across the island, things will settle somewhat this weekend as only the Queen's Grace Jackson meet and the very popular STETHS Invitational meet will be on.

With the Usain Bolt stadium unavailable, the Queen's Grace Jackson, which gets under way at at 8:30 a.m, has been shifted to the National Stadium. The STETHS Invitational will begin at 9 a.m on the school grounds. The likes of Kaliese Spencer, Michael Frater and Shericka Williams who made their debut at the same meet a year ago are set to do the same this time around, concentrating on the 800m.

In fact, with the exception of Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter, who will be competing at the USA Open meet in Madison Square Garden in New York tomorrow, the entire MVP camp are expected to be on show.

Several of the nations top high schools are also expected to be on show, with a keen battle expected to unfold between Kingston College,Wolmer's Boys, Calabar and defending ISSA Boys Champions Jamaica College. Things point to a close Champs this year following performances so far at the various meets.

There will not only be action on the track as fans will once again get a chance to see the powerful Calabar High School throwers in action. The Julian Robinson-coached throwers have continued their awesome form from last season and once again the likes of Ashinia Miller and Fedrick Dacres should be at their best. On the female side, Edwin Allen's Sasha-gaye Marston, St Jago High's Kellion Knibb and Holmwood Technical's Glenieve Grange are expected to lead the way.

While the males will be in stiff competition on the track in Kingston, the top female teams will be renewing their rivalry in Santa Cruz as defending champions Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen, Vere Technical and St Jago will all be in attendance at the STETHS Invitational.

After strong performances so far at the various meets, the Michael Dyke-coached Edwin Allen, who are determined to wrest the title from Holmwood Technical in eight weeks time, will be hoping to continue that great form.
