Look to the west... MoBay manager encourages Reggae Boyz coach to pick more rural players

Orville Powell

On the heels of Montego Bay United recent success in claiming the Red Stripe Premier League second end-of-round title, the club owner, Orville Powell, believes looking to the west could improve the fortunes of Jamaica's football.

The Reggae Boyz created history by qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France, but have failed to get back close in subsequent campaigns. The 1998 team had several players who plied their trade in western Jamaican, but that has not been the case in recent times and Powell believes a return to that philosophy could bear fruit.

"The only time that Jamaica went to the World Cup was when the west played an integral part, with the quality players and the numbers. Once the west went down, the national team went down also," Powell said.

"We have good talent in the west; it is just to harness that talent and nurture it and to be a feeder programme to the national team," he added.

"We have to ensure that when their time come, they are prepared to go and make a positive contribution."

On Monday night, Roen Nelson had fired Portmore into the lead in the 42nd minute only to see Kemiro James equalise with five minutes of regulation time to go. Former Portmore United goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett, who stood between the sticks for Montego Bay United, was the hero for the winners with three fine saves.

As it relates to the Premier League, Powell believes the win will go a long way as it relates to the consolidation of the team's position as one of the competition's better team.

"Teams will also be coming at us, so we have to continue working hard to maintain what we have done and improve," Powell said.

"We have to take to take it to the next step which is to win the Premier League. That is our ultimate aim and the players are ready. This feeling that you get with winning is a different feeling and one we have not felt for a while and we do not want to lose."
