G.C. Foster College hopes for track repair

With the current running track at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports in a serious state of disrepair, Athletics Director Ventley Brown is hoping that the facility will get a facelift in the near future, drawing reference to "promises" he said were made by the previous government.

Officials from German company BSW Regupol are expected to visit the St Catherine-based institution tomorrow and Brown is hoping that this will result in much-needed improvements to what is one of the island's most used facility.

BSW Regupol last year upgraded the track at the National Stadium and is currently overseeing work being carried out at Stadium East.

"Former Minister Grange had said that the three tracks to be repaired or resurfaced in the island were the National Stadium, Stadium East and the G.C. Foster College," said Brown.

"There is some work now going on at the Stadium East and we sincerely hope that the next track to be dealt with will be G.C. Foster College. We are well aware that there is a new administration in place and we have to give persons time to maybe adjust and look at the proposals that were made through the previous government and see what they can do," Brown added.

It would cost in the region of $75 million to completely resurface the track and mindful of the possible financial constraints, Brown is hoping that officials at the Sports Development Foundation will at least consider funding repairs to the worst affected areas of the track.

"I received quotations from three international suppliers and none of these companies quoted me under $75 million (to resurface the track)," noted Brown.

The track at G.C. Foster was the site of former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell's first sub-10 (9.99) and also saw Usain Bolt equal his then personal-best 10.03 in 2008.
