WESTERN BUREAU: Judith Torres, the Cuban national who tried to use a fake green card to enter the United States through Jamaica, will have to wait until February for her sentence to be delivered. Torres, a 40-year-old economist, pleaded guilty to uttering a forged document when she appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on November 21. During her last court appearance on December 7, her sentencing was put off to allow her to regularise her status in Jamaica. Martyn Thomas, Torres' attorney, had argued at that time that she would not be allowed to leave Cuba again if she should be deported there, and that she should be allowed an opportunity to seek asylum in Jamaica. work permit When the matter was brought up on Tuesday, Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris was told that Torres is still awaiting a response to her application for status regularisation and a work permit. Sentencing was subsequently put off again until February 9. On September 27, Torres arrived in Jamaica from Cuba, and the following day she attempted to board a flight to the United States at the Sangster International Airport. However, checks revealed that her green card was fraudulent and she was arrested and charged. - C.T. |
