There were jubilant scenes at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night as Montego Bay United Sports Club scored a 3-1 penalty kick win over Red Stripe Premier League league leaders Portmore United in the second end-of-round final of the national football competition. The team from the west had to come from behind to achieve their victory on a night dubbed Red Stripe Football Mondays. Before the shoot-out, both teams had played to 1-1 draw at full and extra-time. Fabian McCarthy, Leon Irving and Troy Smith were the penalty scorers for Montego Bay. While Ricardo Cousins, Ewan Grandison, Adrian Reid missed from the spot for Portmore United. Tremaine Stewart converted the lone penalty for the St Catherine-based Portmore. Roen Nelson opening the scoring for Portmore in the 42nd minute for a 1-0 half-time lead. However, Kemiro James equalised for Montego Bay in the 85th minute. Montego dominated the early minutes of the match but squandered a number of easy chances. Oliver Trail came close to giving Montego Bay United the lead in the 15th minute but his spectacular 30-yard effort was saved by Garice McPherson, who had to dive to his left to push away the ball for a corner. Montego Bay's Allan Ottey also went close in the 32nd minute. He received a through pass from Adrian Robinson inside the 18-yard box but his effort went agonisingly wide. Nelson gave Portmore the lead three minutes before half-time. Eric Vernan crossed well from the right and with the goalkeeper out of position Nelson pounced on the cross and slotted home past custodian Jacomeno Barrett. Portmore United started the second period very positively and came close to doubling their advantage twice in the opening 10 minutes of the half. In the 52nd minutes Nelson collected a pass from Stewart inside the 18-yard box but after eluding two defenders, his powerful right-footed shot was well saved by Barrett. Stewart's 35-yard long range volley was then spectacularly saved by Barrett, who tipped the ball over the crossbar. With five minutes to go Portmore were made to pay for their earlier misses, when Kemiro James fired home from close range. |
