RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Sports Writer
THE Mico University College and UTech Knights were victorious on yesterday's second day of competition in the UTech Twenty20 Cricket Classics at the University of Technology field. The Mico team with their seven-wicket win over the University of Technology were scoring their second consecutive win of the tournament, while defending champions UTech, who lost to Mico in the opening game, bounced back with a thrilling two-run win over G.C. Foster College. The Mico University, who are now leaders of the competition, had an easy win over the Wavell Hinds-led UWI team. After winning the toss for the second game in a row, and after 10 overs, they were 49 for two. During that time, they lost the wicket of Sheldon Samuels for zero, who was bowled by pacer Shaun Earle Lee and former national Under-19 skipper Paul Palmer, who was bowled by off-spinner Fredrick Hermit for seven. The UWI team found themselves in trouble after their third-wicket stand put on 32 runs to be 65 for two, as they lost three wickets for two runs to be 67 for five. However, the likes of skipper Shane Brooks who was run out for 36, and Hinds with 21, brought some respectability to the score as they ended their innings on 98. Former Excelsior High player Anthony Wadsworth, bowling his off break, was the most successful bowler with five wickets for 19 off his allotted four overs. Despite being 61 for three at one stage, it was smooth sailing for Mico as an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 40 runs between top scorer Zeneiffe Fowler, on 29 not out, and 18 not out from skipper Johnson brought them to their easy three-wicket win. Following his half-century in the opening game, Shacaya Thomas contributed with 25 along with opener Vander Rowe who made 24. Following their defeat to Mico on the previous day, the UTech Knights had to win their game against G.C. Foster College, who won their opening game against the UWI team, if they stood any chance of retaining the title. The home team after batting first made a score of 136 for six off their allotted overs as opener Jon Ross Campbell with 52 and Cassius Burton with 20 made most runs for them. Derval green was the top bowler for the Spanish Town-based team with four for 22. Green returned for a good all-round performance for his team as has he slammed an aggressive 82, which included seven towering sixes and six fours to top-score for his team. However, his knock was not good enough to deny the defending champions as in a thrilling final over, pacer Ricardo Williams bowled his team to a nail-biting two-run win. |
