Captain Horace Burrell - File

The way is now clear for Captain Horace Burrell to return to the helm of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), after serving three months of a six-month ban from football's world governing body, the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA).

The ban was for Burrell's reported ethics violation in relation to the alleged Caribbean Football Union (CFU) cash-for-votes bribery scandal in Trinidad and Tobago, which took place in May last year.

Burrell, who will see the other three months of his penalty deferred to a two-year probationary period, was accused of being a party to the scandal that reportedly saw former FIFA presidential candidate, Mohamed bin Hammam, offering bribes of US$40,000 to several CFU officials in return for votes.

Bin Hammam, who has since been banned for life from all football-related activities, was gearing up to challenge FIFA incumbent, Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter, who was later re-elected unopposed as president.

Former CFU president, Austin 'Jack' Warner, who resigned in the aftermath of the allegations, has since accused FIFA of attempting a "hostile take-over" of the CFU and CONCACAF.

It was uncertain if Burrell would have been returned as president of the JFF in the aftermath of his ban.

However, signs emerged that Burrell's position would not be challenged.

Burrell, who was a CFU presidential candidate at the time of his ban, was later named to a FIFA-sanctioned CFU nine-member normalisation committee in the interim.

The Jamaican is expected to face the media today at a JFF board of directors press conference.
