Not about the money ... Davis expects pay-cut move to lower league to pay off eventually

Out-of-favour national defender Claude Davis admits that he took a pay-cut to join English League Two team Crawley Town last September, but believes the outfit are headed in the right direction as they push for promotion to League One.

Davis joined the League Two outfit on a short-term contract last year, but after a very successful season to date, signed a new 18-month contract during this month's January transfer window. The latest move for the 32-year-old centre back is a far cry from the £3m deal, making the player Jamaica's record signing, which took Davis from Sheffield to Derby County in 2007 and also far from the lofty heights of the Premiership, in which the player competed that season.

However, the player believes he has done the right thing despite plying his trade three levels below the top flight and credits Crawley with being an ambitious club. It is that ambition that Davis believes will get them promoted.

"I got a few offers and they were for more money than the gaffer gave me, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices," Davis told British tabloid The Sun.

"Hopefully, we'll go up and I'll get my money back."

Davis had found appearances hard to come by in the final year of his contract, for Crystal Palace, the club he joined from Derby in 2009. He was then released by the outfit last summer. While the player claims to have had other, and more lucrative offers after leaving the club, he believes the decision to join Crawley was the right one.

"When I left Palace last year, I wanted to join a club that was going places and Crawley are," Davis said.

"It's a special club and one I look forward to being a big part of in the future. It's a club going places and I want to be part of that."
