Alleged gang leader goes to trial next week

The trial of the alleged leader of the St James-based Stone Crusher Gang is scheduled to begin on January 23.

Eldon Calvert is to stand trial for the 2006 murders of five persons in Salt Spring, St James.

The date was set when Calvert and his three co-accused appeared in the Home Circuit Court yesterday.

Calvert is charged jointly with his brother Gleason Calvert and Michael Heron in connection with the fatal shooting of Robert Green and Eldon Ledgister in September 2006.

He is also jointly charged with Orrette Grant for the November 2006 triple murder of 56-year-old golf caddie Wesley Scott, 36-year-old cookshop operator Hartley Campbell, and 55-year-old shopkeeper Victor Young.

It is understood that Campbell was a witness in the double murder case.

Eldon Calvert was captured in Trelawny in January 2008 after he was listed among the country's 10 most-wanted men.
