Anthony Davis, the Director of Sport at the University of Techno-logy (UTech), has been nominated by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to the Committee for University Sports Study (CESU). Davis was notified of his nomination in mid-December 2011.

The Committee for University Sports Study is one of 13 committees that assists and advises the executive committee in the overall administration of the FISU. It also promotes the study of university sport by organising a conference during the Universiade and the FISU Forum. Davis' appointment will run until 2015.

Based in Brussels, Belgium, the FISU is responsible for the organisation and governance of worldwide competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28.

It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organisations and currently has 153 member associations from five continental regions. It is the only international federation with more than 50 sports on its competition programme.

FISU stages its events every two years. They currently include two Universiades (summer and winter) and 32 World University Champion-ships. Meanwhile, FISU permanently links the academic world with sports by hosting a number of educational events - conferences, forums and seminars. These events closely assist in promoting sport as one of the main components of the educational system.

As a member of the CESU, Davis, who turns 60 on February 3, will have his hands full as he departs the island soon for Glasgow University where he will be pursuing a doctorate that will have as its focus the legacy of cities hosting major international games. He will also be working with the city of Glasgow as they prepare to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In his absence, Davis' duties will be assumed by Richard Toomer who lectures in Sports Management at UTech.

President of UTech Professor Errol Morrisson says the appointment of Davis to the CESU speaks to the drive to take sport to a different paradigm.

"It emphasises the commitment to taking sports to the ultimate level. Here, we have a practitioner who is well steeped in the modus operandi of a cross-section of sport and manages it well at our institution. We are offering him financial support as he takes his understanding to the higher level," he said.

"It also speaks to the brand. It is not Anthony Davis' appointment, it is Jamaica's."
