TCND reports success in drug busts, arrests

The TransNational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) is reporting significant increases in its performance for 2011 compared to 2010.

According to the TCND, 12 major drug gangs were disrupted by way of arrests and prosecution as well as by way of drugs, guns, conveyance and money seizures.

There was a 210.65 per cent increase in the seizure of cocaine with a total of 1,215.7lb (552.591kg) seized in 2011 when compared to 391.3lb (177.883kg) in 2010.

There was also a five per cent increase in the quantity of cured ganja seized in 2011. A total of 80,810.2lb (36,731.93kg) was seized in 2011 compared to 76, 862.4lb (34,937.44kg) in 2010.

The TCND says 20,216 arrests were made for various breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act when compared to the 10, 255 in 2010.

In addition, there was a 100 per cent increase in the number of males arrested. In 2011, 19,268 arrests were made where as in 2010 there were 9,933.

Further, the TCND says there was a 22.9 per cent increase in the number of foreign nationals arrested. One-hundred-and-sixty-one foreigners were arrested compared to 131 in 2010.

It is understood that the United States accounted for the largest number of foreigners arrested with 47 compared to 19 in 2010.

Meanwhile, it is understood that 267 persons were arrested at the two international airports during 2011.
