Singer of the Year Winner: Christopher Martin The young rising star did a bit of globetrotting this year and produced some sing along worthy songs. His Cheater's Prayer put an interesting spin on an old topic and his Paper Loving also got a lot of airplay. Runner Up: Tarrus Riley Singer Tarrus Riley showed us a different side this year as he experimented with dancehall for songs like Summer Fling, Come Ova and others. Yet he still kept his 'singy-singy' side coming with Shaka Zulu Pickney, Going Out, ComIng In. He also collaborated with superstar Shaggy for Just Another Girl while working on his next album.
>> Upcoming Artiste of the Year Winner: Specialist He may not have won last year's 'Kings & Queens of the Dancehall', but Specialist definitely came out as a winner. His original song Phone Card became an instant success which he soon followed up with a video. Signed to the Downsound label, more is expected from him in 2012. Runner Up: Tommy Lee Hailing from the Gaza camp, Tommy Lee just began gaining popularity at the end of 2011. His rather interesting style in songs like Some Bwoy, Stocking Up Di Paper, A Million and Shelly Christmas has gained him a listening ear. PEOPLE'S >> Band of the Year Winner: Dubtonic Having won 'Battle of the Bands' in 2010, Dubtonic has travelled the globe and kept the reggae flag going high last year. In November 5, during an appearance at the seventh staging of the annual Reggae Culture Salute showcase in the USA, Dubtonic Kru received a Congressional Proclamation from the US House of Representatives. Runner-Up: Raging Fyah If you didn't know about Raging Fyah before last year, then you found out about them in 2011. The band rose in popularity with the release of their album Judgment Day. Their song Judgment Day as well as Far Away had
people turning out to a number of live events to see them perform. >> Producer of the year Winner: JA Productions (Justus Arison and Patrick 'Roach' Samuel) It took only one big rhythm for the year for JA Productions to step out of the limelight and into the spotlight with the 'Overproof 'rhythm. The rhythm spawned hits such as Mavado's Settle Down, Aidonia's Caribbean Girls, Khago's Tun Up Di Ting, Tifa's Dash Out and more. At the end of 2011 they released the 'Rumfire' riddim. Runner Up: Cr203 Productions - ZJ Chrome Having been on the production scene for a while, ZJ Chrome has consistently brought good rhythms that get played on radio and in every dance. He closed off 2010 with the 'Dancehall EFX' rhythm and in 2011 had the one drop 'Cardiac Strings', 'Contra' with Mavado's Do Road and Tifa's Matie Wine, and V6 with Popcaan's' Head Bad and Kartel's Duppy Know Who Fi Frighten.
>> Female Artiste of the Year Winner: Tifa Tifa's star shone bright this year as she dominated among the female artistes. Songs like Matie Wine, Get Flat, Dash Out had the women walking out and singing along. Her collaboration with Wayne Marshall and Fambo Swaggin(WTF) was a club banger that was heard all over. Runner Up: Ce'Cile Ce'Cile released her Jamaicanisation album this year, as she travelled across the globe promoting her album and new music. While in studio she produced songs like No Other Man, Missing You, Cheater's Prayer Counteraction, Material Girl and more. Over the course of two weeks our loyal readers voted online and via texting for their favourites from the 2011 entertainment scene. Here are the winners and runners-up that the people picked in theSTAR People's Choice Awards! >> Deejay of the Year Winner: Vybz Kartel Despite being incarcerated for the latter part of 2011, deejay Vybz Kartel has not lost his popularity in the business. Kartel's presence was felt throughout the year with songs like Bike Back, the summer anthem Summertime, Freaky Gal and more recently Why Pree. These songs are still part of the catalogue at any current dance. Runner-up: Popcaan Young deejay Popcaan grew into his own last year dominating from mid-year with the hit song Raving. With his popular slangs and songs like Only Man She Want, Disrespect, Head Bad and Party Shot, Popcaan has kept himself and the Gaza current. He is one to look out for in 2012. >> Sound/Selector of the Year Winner: ZJ Chrome ZJ Chrome stepped up to the plate on radio and at events. The Zip Jock with his creative playing and signature interesting dubs soon cemented him as one of the station's most popular ZJs. Outside of Zip FM he has also held down the party scene at most of the popular events. His 'Urban Mondays' segment and party set on Fridays always have people tuning in. Runner-up: Coppershot The 'sound that runs uptown' is what Coppershot Disco is known for. The sound is one of the more dependable sounds at the most popular events. One of Dream Weekend's Dream sounds, Coppershot made their presence felt at Igloo, Osmosis, Absinthe and many more. They also released popular mixtapes for fans and continued producing hit songs. >> Best Dressed male Winner: Beenie Man Beenie Man has long held the title of not 'king of the dancehall' but king of the fashion realm. The artiste is consistently nominated and usually wins for his dapper suits and interesting styles. Runner-Up: Konshens Konshens is known to keep it young and fresh for his dressing. Going from casual with his cut off jeans and hats to dressy with well-fitted suits. The ladies always have their eyes on this star.
>> Singjay of the Year Winner: Mavado Mavado had another strong year in music with hits like Settle Down, Delilah, collaborating on tunes like One By One and more. The singjay signed to the international label 'We The Best Music Group' and even more is expected from him, especially overseas, as he prepares to drop another album. Runner-Up: I-Octane I-Octane has been busy on stage shows and preparing for his album Cry for the Nation to be released soon. In the meantime, he kept heads bobbing with Bad Mind Fi Di Year, Burn Dem Bridge, Nuh Ramp Wid Wi, and more. Controversial Artiste of the Year Winner: Vybz Kartel Kartel strives to be controversial. Having created his own dancehall reality show Teacha's Pet, which centered on his interesting love life, the artiste is known to like public attention. His hair extensions and rumored bleaching increased awareness of him. It was his October arrest and prolonged incarceration, however, that have made him top of the list. Runner-Up: Clif-Twang This personality spawned an unusual hit song and slang with Nobody Canna Cross It. Appearing on prime time news one day was the best thing to happen to Clifton 'Clif-Twang' Brown. Brown soon found himself at events like Reggae Sumfest, signed to LIME and even involved in politics during his 15 minutes of fame. Song of the Year: (Top 5) 1) Kartel - Summertime 2) Popcaan - Raving 3) Mavado - Settle Down 4) Popcaan - Only Man She Want 5) Protoje & Ky-Mani Marley - Rasta Love Best Dressed Female Winner: Tifa Young, hip and hype easily describes this star's dressing. Tifa is always one to try out different style to fit her changing moods, which makes her an eclectic dresser. Fans took notice of her outfits in 2011 and voted her the best of the year. Runner Up: D'Angel D'Angel is always on top of the fashion scene. This diva is always dolled up whether she's at a party, at a show or in the streets. The artiste is always put together well making her a fashion favourite. Worst Dressed Male Winner: Elephant Man Colourful and strange easily describes Elephant Man's sense of style. Over-bright colours, weird combinations and 'out-there' fashion, is what has put Elephant Man in the worst dressed category. Runner Up: Fambo This artiste rarely looks well put together when it comes to his dressing. The artiste may have made a come back with his hit songs but his sense of fashion could use some updating. Worst Dressed Female Winner: Macka Diamond Macka Diamond has her moments where she looks well together and professional. However some of her stage looks and off stage appearances are not her shining moment fashion wise. This is evident by her getting a whopping 60 per cent of the online voting making her the clear winner in the category. Macka would be better off finding outfits that suit her position as an older yet relevant star. Runner Up: Bridgez Bridgez is another artiste whose looks are not always appropriate for the setting or the moment. An update in what suits her style is needed.
