Service Makes Sense - Mobile solutions for many problems

I like it when I can test a service or product and then share that experience with you. Especially when it's good. So, I had a mobile phone to repair and visited Smart Mobile Solutions (SMS) on Ruthven Road, St Andrew.

The layout of the store was certainly nice and welcoming, but it was the knowledge level of the sales team that struck me.

I had, what seemed like a thousand questions. And they patiently answered them all without one, "I don't know", "I'm not sure", or "I'll have to get back to you". While talking, my phone was logged and I was presented with a receipt complete with tracking number.

Sure I could call to check on the phone, but armed with the tracking number, I logged into the online portal for updates on the status of the phone repair. The portal is simple and easy to navigate; all I had to do was enter the (long) series of digits and I was in. And there was my phone with all the details I needed in plain English and no tech gibberish. There was also the repair cost and the date it would be ready.

That was easy. So easy, I inquired further.

In addition to repairs on just about any model of mobile phone including the perennially popular BlackBerry, SMS offers updating and upgrading, unlocking, phone and accessory sales and recycling (or trade in if you insist).

Yes, recycling. Instead of dumping that lithium filled electronic device into our already polluted environment, you can take your old mobile phones to SMS for them to properly pull apart and ecologically dispose.

But I digress. Back to the services. The outfit also does distribution of genuine and generic accessories facilitating smaller vendors entre-preneurial efforts. Plus, they also develop software apps for handsets. But that is a topic for another day.

In speaking to the duo behind the successful service mobile solution powerhouse, Dane Spence and Marlon Hudson, I found out that SMS is an official BlackBerry Alliance Partner and that the major mobile telecoms sometimes outsource their handset repairs to SMS.

Beyond the store, SMS has a very helpful website which encapsulates the efficient repair portal previously mentioned. The site also boasts a complete listing of handsets and accessories on sale and availability.

Wait. You don't have a computer? That's ok. You can download the app to your BB and get the information 'same way'. And you can get BB tips to boot.

In this country, we complain a lot about poor customer service all the time. So it is really refreshing to report on customer service that exceeds expectations. Check it out and let me know on Facebook if you agree.

Tech Glitch: "I'm looking for a reliable, free word processor. Is Google Docs still the best option," Dana asks.

Tech Fix: Google Docs is a robust free office solution with word processing, spreadsheets and presentation applications. Other great options include Office.org and Microsoft Office 365 which offers seemly integration with the ubiquitous Microsoft Office desktop application.
