CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer
When The STAR arrived at Fort Charles for French Connection, it was already 2012. The venue was partially full and patrons could be seen flanking the edges of the venue using their phones to capture the fireworks that coloured the neighbouring sea. The event was dubbed 'The Immaculate', which means free from spot or spotlessly clean, and honestly, if there was ever a party that had no flaws, this event would be regarded as such. The venue was like a total VIP experience, decorated to resemble an Egyptian palace, even the ushers were dressed in accordance, wearing robes and white bandanas. Patrons were given complimentary premium beverages for the entire night as well as food. And this treatment was extended until the wee hours of the morning. Each section of the venue had a chill area decorated with sofas and chandeliers hanging from the roof, and the official VIP area was erected above the dance floor to form a huge balcony. It carried its own dancing space, with a hassle-free bar and exclusive catering courtesy of Gary of CB Chicken. There was food in abundance and variety, ranging from lobster, fry chicken, jerk chicken, rice, cake, and soup among others. The clinical DJ Delano of Renaissance played hip songs such as Niggas In Paris by Kanye West and Jay-Z , All I do Is Win by DJ Khalid and All Of The Lights by Kanye West and Rihanna. "I want to see every proud Jamaican put your hand in the air right now," he said, and played Mavado and Chipmunk's Every Gyal. At 12:40 a.m., Delano stirred up some dancehall selections such as Vybz Kartel's Bike Back, Serani and Bugle's Doh and Ding Dong's Holiday. The females, already clearly in dance mode already, were encouraged by Delano to get more interactive by playing Beenie Man and Ms Thing's Dude and Baby Cham's Vitamin S. During the playing of these songs, females could be seen taking the dancefloor with cup in hand while gyrating their bodies. Delano then played a series of dancing songs such as Nuh Linga, Bad Man Forward and Pon Di Riva before passing on the musical baton to DJ Karysma. In the same breath, while collecting the microphone from Delano, Karysma yelled, "Wi ago enjoy wi self tonight, all who come fi enjoy yu self put yu hand in the air." He then played old school classics like Billy Jean by Michael Jackson and of course Madonna's Like A Virgin, and as expected, the females sang the words to perfection. The old-school formula was working for DJ Karysma and he continued on the same note when he switched to old-school soca songs at 1 a.m. Songs like Byron Lee's Dollar Wine and Swing The Engine by the Burning Flames, got good response from the crowd. "Every man wine a woman now let's do this," the DJ commanded. Even when he went for dancehall songs, he still went old school, and so at 1:25 a.m., he played Beenie Man's Nuff Gal and Bounty Killer's Look Into My Eyes. And the audience welcomed every single song. The STAR left the venue after 2 a.m. during an exciting segment of pop music. During this time, the 'Egyptian living room' at French Connection resembled a scene from a college party, as patrons jumped and danced to party songs such as Party Rock Anthem by Lmfao. "Let me see you shuffle now," Karysma could be heard saying as we exited the venue.
