75-y-o charged with bail breach

A 75-year-old man who stood surety for his daughter's $1,000 bail bond 10 years ago was surprised when he was told the amount had multiplied to $13,500 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Clifford Swaby, of a Kingston address, was told he would have to pay the fine after he failed to pay his daughter's bail bond for a traffic offence from 10 years ago.

Swaby appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court for breaches of the Bail Act.

He will return to court on January 5 when he is expected to pay the $13,500 in fines.

It is alleged that on March 6, 2001, Swaby was supposed to pay $1,000 for her bail but was told by his daughter that someone else had paid it on her behalf. He was surprised when the police came to his home recently asking if he knew the accused. He replied that it was his daughter but she did not live with him.

He was told to report to court or face arrest.
