Rape increase concerns police

The Police have increased their presence in the Ocean Boulevard area of downtown Kingston as records from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) have shown that there is an increase in rape near the area in the past three months, especially in the last four weeks.

It is, therefore, advisable that members of the public be extremely careful when in proximity to the area, particularly at nights.

The following safety tips should be practised:

1. Walk in groups.

2. Do not accept rides from strange motorists.

3. Try and attract attention to yourself by screaming if you believe you are being abducted.

4. If you believe you are being followed, walk in a well-lit area.

5. Refrain from using the area as a romantic meeting point.

6. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid being distracted by your cellphone or any other electronic device.

Anyone who notices any suspicious activities in the area should call the police 119 emergency number immediately.
