El Patron to outclass 'em

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

WHAT makes Tuesday's Supreme Ventures Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes an interesting race is the simple fact that none of the 15 runners who will face the starter have any claims of invincibility - even more so after ante-post favourite EL PATRON was drawn to break from the dreaded one-hole in the almost-capacity field.

"It's a KOD," the colt's trainer, Anthony Nunes, told STAR Sports yesterday afternoon. "The kiss of death, that's what I call it," he explained.

Nunes and champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, whose ALL CORRECT was beaten a length and a half by EL PATRON in the November 26 Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy at 1400 metres, were both hoping for mid to outside draws.

DaCosta got his wish with ALL CORRECT being drawn at stall seven, but Nunes was left to ponder EL PATRON's fate, considering the colt's only loss in four starts was from stall two in the Cash Pot Only One For Me Trophy in October.

Yesterday, he was at a loss for words as to what the game plan would be for EL PATRON from stall one.

"The truth of the matter is I will have to leave it up to the rider," he said.

"When the gate opens, he'll have to decide what to do. It has been taken out of my hands. Dick will have to show his mettle now."

"A lot of horses at the one draw are intimidated in a 15-horse field. They also tend to be in the gate much longer because they are loaded first," he pointed out.

Nunes believes his rival, ALL CORRECT, is in the prime spot to turn the tables on EL PATRON.

"There is no doubt about that. He'll be tough to beat now," he said.

However, in a field of two-year-olds, none of whom are unbeaten, there is bound to be a surprise or two, one of which could be Ian Parsard's POTCHEEN, a winner of his last two races from four starts, including a two and three-quarter length victory over ALL CORRECT at 1300 metres on November 12.

Similar to EL PATRON and ALL CORRECT, POTCHEEN has also sparkled at exercise ahead of the big $4.25m race. The colt clocked 1:30.2 for seven furlongs Tuesday morning and will again be partnered by champion jockey Omar Walker.

Dick Cardenas, who is aboard EL PATRON, won't be the only non-native in the event. Champion trainer DaCosta's filly, MY FRIEND LUCY, one of five runners he has in the race, will have Puerto Rican Orlando Bocachica in the saddle.

Bocachica, a 29-year-old, has logged more than 800 winners in the United States since 2000, riding in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Boston, Calder and Florida's Gulfstream Park where he has become a hit, renowned for booting home long shots.

The Puerto Rican was booked by MY FRIEND LUCY's owner, Winston Kong, who, ironically, owned RUN TAT RUN, who won the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes for DaCosta in 1997. He has not won the race since despite being champion trainer for the last six years.

DaCosta believes MY FRIEND LUCY's bloodline gives her a shot against the boys.

"She might need the experience, running against winners for the first time but her breeding is suited to a mile, being a sister of JETSETTER and THE GUMMER," he pointed out.
