Jamalco still dreams of top-flight football

Local alumna giants Jamalco of Clarendon remain serious about a team of their own for the Premier League in the very near future.

Jamalco currently has an established team, a staple in the senior National Netball League, which currently boasts seven players in the national team. The intention is to eventually match the status of its netball involvement.

The vision was originally articulated in an address by Corporate Communications Manager Leo Lambert two years ago, when the company embarked, in tandem with the Clarendon Football Association (CFA), on revamping the corner league it ran to the status of a fully organised parish association league.

Then managing director, Jerome Maxwell, publicly endorsed the idea and gave the green light for the company's financial backing.

The restructuring included an increased number of teams, putting in place an effective disciplinary system, running the competition along standard registration and operational procedures, and of course increased sponsorship. The changes were expected to be the precursor to the ultimate goal of forming a team taken from the best players in the league, and progressing through the various CFA tiers.

The second part of the plan - finding a squad of the best players on completion of the league and registering them as a Jamalco team in the CFA's transition league, the Division One has already reaped rewards, with the moved earning instant success: promotion to the Major League.

The spotlight was again placed on that objective during the awards presentation for the just-concluded Jamalco Football League.

The CFA's president, Michael Ricketts, who is credited for Jamalco's reorganisation of the competition, following a critical letter he wrote to the company outlining a number of short comings he had detected, said he was satisfied they had put in the necessary improvements and were well on their way to achieving their ambitious goals.

"Jamalco has shown they mean business, and I am confident they will be playing in the Super League next year," a clear hint, he believes they will top the parish's Major League on their first attempt.
