THE Gleaner's ace shooter Omar Wolfe dominated the MegaMart-sponsored Business House Basketball Association's (BHBA) 3 on 3 awards presentation function at the National Housing Trust Clubhouse, Oxford Road, last Saturday night. Wolfe, a pressman at The Gleaner, won five major awards and another for being a member of the team, who finished third in Division II after losing two competitive semi-final matches to the then unbeaten Western Sports. During the season, which saw G4S and National Land Agency capturing the Division I and II titles, respectively, Wolfe won trophies for his game high performances in the league and play-offs. His first award was for having emerged the league's top three-point shooter. He was also cited for being top three-point shooter in the play-offs, top scorer in Division II, top scorer in the play-offs and MVP for the Division II play-offs. Wolfe said he was happy with the multiple awards and grateful for being cited by the BHBA. "I wanted Gleaner to reach the play-offs and it took some hard work on my part to get them there," said Wolfe who also secured a $5,000 prize for top player and gift vouchers from Western Sports. "I am already looking forward to next year when our team will be boosted by some more quality players," he added. Members of the Gleaner team were present to accept the third-place trophy, mini-awards and a cake donated by MegaMart. They were Joe Harris, Derval Davis, Jermaine Bailey, Ricardo Blackstock and Raymond Simpson. Meanwhile, Dave Blackwood of Division I runners-up Jamaica Teachers' Association Co-operative Credit Union topped the individual awards in that division, winning four awards including top three-point shooter in both the league and play-offs, and top scorer. Former national players Roger Marshall, player/coach of Division I champions G4S and Captain Clifton Lumsden, president of the BHBA, were both honoured for their long and continued active association with basketball.
Marshall led his team up to the podium to receive the Division I trophy, while members of National Land Agency received the Division II trophy. Significantly, both finals went the distance - game five.
Other players receiving individual awards were Marshall, Omar Barnes of G4S, Rohan Robinson of beaten Division II finalists Western Sports, Kevin Daley of former champions Grace Canning, Jeffrey Brown of Division I campaigners NWC, as well as Dale Gayle, Omar Ricketts and Howard Edwards of National Land Agency, Carlos Henry (top referee).
NCB won the dress parade award, Grace Canning the rally winners award, while Pan Caribbean and VMBS copped the most disciplined team awards for Division I and II respectively.
Allie McNab, adviser to Sports Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, brought greetings and congratulations on her behalf, disclosing that to mark the 50th Independence anniversary in 2012, a whoop on every corner programme will be implemented by the sports ministry.
