Fixed election date |
|||||
Some vendors were engaged this week in a heated discussion and were predicting a "bleak" Christmas because of the December 29 election date. One of the women said that she was hoping that the election would be held in early January so they could at least have the Christmas week to sell their goods and enjoy the holidays. Another woman said she was certain that she was going to lose a lot of money, because there was no way people were going to do any great deal of shopping because of the election. A man who was listening keenly to the conversation remarked, "well, that is why I am all for a fixed date election like what they have in the United States of America." "My reason is that, once it is put into law when an election will take place, then people can plan around it. Now, this sudden election has disrupt a lot of people's businesses and activities", the man said.
The man explained that his brother kept a dance every New Year's Eve and, after the election date was announced, his brother said it made no sense keeping the dance.
According to one of the women, her sister had planned to come to Jamaica for Christmas, but when her sister heard about the election, she said she would come during Easter instead.
"So you see, a lot of people who had planned to come for the Christmas, I am sure, will not be coming again," she remarked.
One of the reasons given by the woman for people putting a hold on their trip to Jamaica is that they were accustomed to bloody elections. "But, since crime has gone down, I am hoping that no lives will be lost because of the election," she said.
"My son got shot during the last election and, therefore, I would not encourage any of my relatives to come for Christmas this year. I do hope that, next time, they don't have an election right in the middle of the holidays, because it is really the time of year we get to make extra money and enjoy ourselves. A special date for the election would make sense," the woman added.
There is no provision in the law for a fixed-date election. The Representation of the People's Act would have to be amended before there can be a fixed-date election.
