Despite the calling of the general election in the Christmas party season, the Police High Command says there will be no ban on functions and parties during election time.

Prime minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Andrew Holness announced on Sunday that Jamaicans will elect a new government on December 29. The announcement was made in Mandeville, Manchester, where thousands of Labourites gathered for a mass meeting. In the wake of the announcement, a number of promoters and avid partygoers have wondered if permission will be granted for events to be kept between nomination day, December 12, and election day.

In a release sent to THE STAR from Karl Angell, director of communication of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the police have confirmed that there will be no ban. The release stated, "The Police High Command is advising the public that there is no ban on functions, parties, or any other such related entertainment activities during the official election period, which begins on nomination day, Monday, December 12. Persons wanting to conduct such events should apply for the required police permit in the usual manner to the police commander in charge of the division in which the function is scheduled to take place."
