Businessman on fraud rap remanded

A 62-year-old businessman who has been accused of swindling over $1 million from a female complainant, was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

He is Dennis Daley of a Stony Hill, St Andrew, address.

Daley has been charged with four counts of fraudulently inducing persons to invest money, two counts of operating as a securities dealer without a licence, and engaging in the business of trading without a licence.

He is to return to court December 9, when the matter will be mentioned, as the file is incomplete.

Allegations are that between July 2009 and February 2010, the accused, who operates an investment company by the name of Venture Trader International on Oxford Road in Kingston, told the complainant that his company is legitimate.

It is alleged that the accused told the complainant that he could offer her an interest rate of eight per cent on Jamaican currency and seven per cent on the United States currency.

However, it is reported that the complainant, who then invested J$1.7 million and US$10,000 into the company, received no such returns.

The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.
