Melbourne batting all-rounder Damion Jacobs and St Ann opener John Campbell yesterday gave the national selectors something to think about ahead of selecting Jamaica's team for next next month's lucrative Caribbean Twenty20 Tournament, which will be held jointly by Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Jacobs, who in recent seasons have been a consistent performer with both bat and ball for his club, especially in limited overs formats of the game, hit a quick-fire 44 off 30 balls and claimed 4-8 off three overs, while Campbell hit 56 off 36 balls, as their team, Bernard Jr XI, recorded a 35-run win over Tamar Lambert XI in Jamaica's third trial match at Kensington Park. The right-handed Jacobs hit two sixes and two fours during his knock, while the left-handed 18-year-old Campbell, who has in the past represented the West Indies Under-15 and Under-19 teams, slammed four sixes and two fours during his stay at the crease. Bernard Jr XI made 147 off their maximum overs, while Lambert XI in their reply were restricted to 112-7. St Elizabeth opener Brenton Parchment, who after a top score and match-winning innings of 31 off 30 balls in the first trial match, and 27 off 26 balls in the second, followed up with 24 off 22 balls to Bernard Jr XI's next best scorer. Lambert, who was dropped from Jamaica's team last season, and is hoping to find favour with the selectors this time around, claimed 1-23 off three overs with his part-time off spin, while Manchester batting all-rounder Jamie Merchant pocketed 1-18 off his maximum four overs.
Lambert XI, in the meantime, were, in addition to the leg- pin of Jacobs, undermined by part-time off-spinner Andre McCarthy of Melbourne, who took 1-26 from two overs and Bernard Jr who pocketed 1-14 off three overs.
St Ann's other opener Xavier Marshall, with a calculated 43 off 47 balls, including two fours and a six, and Combined Campuses and Colleges batting all-rounder Nkrumah Bonner with 23 off 24 balls and in-form Kingston wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton, with an unbeaten 22 off just 12-balls, made most runs for the losers.
"It was another good trial match as we used the opportunity to give a number of the new players who did not get a lot of opportunity to express themselves in the first game a chance, and for the most part they came good," said Jamaica coach Junior Bennett.
"It also sets up an interesting fourth and final trial match, as a number of players are still vying for places on the team, and will want to use the opportunity to
further impress us the selectors," he added.
The final trial match will be played next Tuesday at Kensington Park.
