A man who says he is unable to drive but is accused of stealing a Honda Fit motor car after it was taken for a test drive was offered $250,000 bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. Patrick Douglas from Crooks Street in Jones Town, St Andrew, is charged with larceny by trick and returns to court on January 31. He is to report to the Admiral Town Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. "I can't drive sir ... . I never drove a car in my life," Douglas had told the court on his previous court appearance which led Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey to question the nexus linking the defendant to the stolen car. The court heard that the owner of the car sourced the information about the defendant, confirmed his address and provided the police with the details. Allegations are that in October, the complainant placed an ad in the Gleaner selling a 2006 Honda Fit. Douglas reportedly responded and called the complainant. The defendant went to the home of the complainant where he was shown the car. He requested a test drive of the car and the complainant accompanied him. Upon returning, the complainant exited the vehicle and left the key in the ignition. Another test drive was requested by the defendant who put the car in reverse and drove away. The car has not been seen since. |
