Store clerk on assault rap to be sentenced

A woman who used a pair of scissors to inflict wounds to her employer's hands because she allegedly accused of her stealing an umbrella will know her fate when she returns to court on December 19 for sentencing.

She is 27-year-old Christine Martin, a store clerk from Kingston 10, who has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and assault at common law.

The employer, Rita Brown, 37, was also charged, however, the charges against her were withdrawn.

Allegations are that on Tuesday, November 1, about 6:30 p.m., Brown was at her store in the Half-Way Tree area when she realised that an umbrella and some jewellery had gone missing from the store.

A meeting was called with all the staff members during which time Martin allegedly got defensive.

The court heard that Martin was asked to leave the store and she refused.

The court also heard that she pulled a scissors from her handbag and attacked Brown.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police.

In her defence, Martin told the court that her employer attacked her first and she only retaliated after she accused her of stealing the umbrella.

A social enquiry report was ordered.
