'Man on a mission' remanded

Nku Mwamba, the illegal alien who claims he is from Trinidad but arrived in Jamaica in 2007 on a mission for King Haile Selassie, was again remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey advised Mwamba that the matter was further delayed as an attorney had taken interest in his case and wants to represent him. He is set to reappear in court on December 5.

Furthermore, the attorney who was not named is said to have asked for that date to make his first appearance before the court on Mwamba's behalf.

Mwamba is charged with possession of, dealing in ganja and illegal entry.

On his prior court appearance, laughter erupted in the courtroom as the defendant tried repeatedly to explain how he came to be in Jamaica from the twin-island republic from 2007, even though he said he was granted only six months to stay.

However, Pusey advised the defendant that "there's no record of your entry in the immigration records."

The RM also told the defendant that the information received from immigration in Trinidad illustrated that he was not a citizen of that country either, which led the defendant to reply, "So where am I from, ma'am?"

The defendant later advised the court that he was at a loss for words as he had communicated to immigration in 2007 when he arrived in Jamaica that he was on a mission for repatriation.

Additionally, he told the court that he changed his birth name in the 1970s from St Patrick St Loius to his current name.

Mwamba was arrested on contraband related charges recently and it alleged that it was later discovered that he is an illegal alien. According to police reports, the defendant, who is a vendor, was seen acting suspiciously.
