Setting for spending

Jackass seh de worl' no level. Jackass seh one more year-end roll roun' an de same people dem set up fe people spen off de money wha dem no ave.

Do you hear the Christmas carols a playing? Do you see the early Christmas lights a blinking? So you see the Christmas sales a advertising? Do you see a broke pocket January 2012 a coming? Jackass sees it clear as day, but still some people are going to get caught - as usual.

For many, many years now Jackass has asked a simple question around this time, late November to early December. Up to now he has not got any answers, but he continues to ask in hope that somewhere the question will strike a chord and get someone to do something different.

And the question is (drum roll, if you please) how comes every year-end people get set up to spend all they have, plus what they can get to borrow, and although they have a tough time making it to payday in the new year they still go through the same cycle year after year?

less tempted

In other words, the world is not level at all, at all. Any company that can pay a bonus at the end of the year could have paid it at another time during the year, when people would be less tempted to spend it all on some stuff that, many times, in a few months they do not want at all. But dem sen' on de bonus or access to some funds at low rates so people can go out an spen' an spen' an spen' - an haffi come back come take backra work again inna de new year.

Of course, nobody forces people to do these things, to read the brochures and see what they want and run out and get it on hire purchase and find out that it is higher purchase because they spend and spend and spend and when they calculate what they really paid for the item they want to collapse. Yeah man, hire purchase is really higher purchase. So yes, nobody forces anybody to consume at extremely high levels in December, but there is a system in place that really pushes the culture.

It also ties into the slavery culture, where Massa would have this one time of year that was a relief from the beating and torture and rape and work without pay, this one time of the year when the slaves would get a chance to let it all hang out. And guess what? Nuh de same black people now whe mosly a get hol inna de Chrismas' spendin' trap!

Is a ting!

And you know what makes it even wickeder in Jamaica this year? An election is in the air. So forget about Santa Claus in a red and white suit with a ho ho ho. The person handing out the free stuff will be in green or orange. And if you think higher purchase takes long to pay off, think about political patronage. Is a lifetime bond.

Jackass sey de worl' no level. Jackass sey ho, ho, ho, will you sell your vote?
