A Caymanian and two Jamaicans who are charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking steps to export 109 pounds of ganja, appeared in the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
They are 29-year-old plumber, Matthew Brown, of the Cayman Islands, 52-year-old wholesale jewellery seller Arthur Garvey, and his common-law wife Annetta Ralph, craft vendor, both of Springfield near Sheffield, Westmoreland.
The allegations are that the police conducted a raid on Garvey's home in Sheffield on November 11. A room to the back of the house as well as the back verandah had 109 pounds of ganja , some of which were
compressed and some loose, along with five pounds of hash oil.
A compressor, two jacks, transparent plastic wrapper, brown masking tape and a metric/pound scale were also found. Brown occupied the back room.
Under caution, Garvey is alleged to have said to the police that the drugs were destined for the Cayman Islands via boat. Brown allegedly told the police that he was at that location to smoke ganja.
The three accused are represented by attorney-at-Law Dionne Meylor-Reid.
Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes offered Garvey and Ralph bail in the sum of $500,000 each with sureties. They are to surrender their travel documents and report to the Negril Police Station three times weekly.
Brown was remanded until December 14 when the case will be mentioned. |
