WESTERN BUREAU:
A distribution-company driver accused of trying to smuggle ganja concealed in teacups, and inside his suitcase, was offered bail in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Thirty-two-year-old Richard Lloyd of Lilliput, St James is charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export four and a half pounds of ganja.
Lloyd's lawyer, Martyn Thomas, told Resident Magistrate (RM) Vivienne Harris that his client had no prior conviction and was on his way to visit relatives in Trinidad at the time of his arrest.
The lawyer noted that Lloyd had not been in any arrangement to carry ganja for anyone, and had been given the suitcase by a man he knew and trusted.
Meanwhile, RM Harris was told there were three statements outstanding on the case file, and that the police already have custody of Lloyd's travel documents.
Lloyd was offered $100,000 bail with three sureties and instructed to submit his fingerprints to the police. He is to report to the Barrett Town Police Station every Tuesday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A stop order is to be placed on all ports of entry, barring him to leave the country.
The case is to be mentioned again on February 9 next year.
Allegations are that on November 16, at 9:45 a.m., Lloyd attempted to board a flight to Kingston, in transit to Trinidad, when his suitcase was subjected to a routine search, and three teacups found inside.
The officer noticed that one of the teacups was broken, and vegetable substance resembling ganja was inside it. A further search of the suitcase revealed a false compartment where more of the drug was found wrapped in four packages. Lloyd was subsequently arrested and charged. |
